Parents meeting

Hi All,
There are a number of items that need to be addressed.

Parents meeting
I would urgently like a meeting with all parents this Saturday after training.
There are a couple of items we need to go over as a group before the game against Hills at Hills on Sunday.
I will call all parents on Friday to check availability.

Hills game:
We will be playing Hills at Hills from 9.30am on court 1. We need everyone to be there by 9am.
The Trimbles and Rodriguez clans will be looking after the bench for this game.

Adopt-a-team (Waratah game)
As part of this year's adopt-a-team policy, the boys have been joined in training by some of the members of Sutherland's Waratah team.
The association has requested that we respond in kind and have assigned us a Waratah home match to watch. Our match is on Saturday, May 13, from 6.45pm.
We can arrange pizzas for the boys and there may even be a half time shooting competition for parents and players.
If I can get confirmation of the number of people who can attend by Saturday, May 6, that would be ideal.

Chocolate money
Just a reminder for all parents that the chocolate money needs to be back in over the next couple of weeks. Also, could any parents that haven't paid court fees get them to either myself or Michelle this weekend.

Thanks all. I hope to see you all Saturday.

Training update

Hi all,
We will be having a training session on Wednesday, April 26, from 2pm at the Sharks Stadium.
After that we return to our normal 2pm session on Saturday, April 29, and have a game next week against Hills at Hills.
If there are any questions just give me a call on the normal numbers.
Cheers
Alvin

Game report: North Sydney Black

Top game: Michael, seen here rebounding, is improving with every game.

North Sydney Black v Sutherland
At Sutherland.
Loss: 43-27

The boys struggled defensively in this game allowing North Sydney to score at a rate of two-to-one points in every quarter but the last. Norths also have a jump shooter who was able to get a couple of easy baskets before Sharks started to come out to him. But mostly, as in last weeks loss, our lack of rebounding and shooting really hurt us. As a team we shot less than 20 per cent and the rebounding under our own basket was particularly weak, giving Norths three or four shots at each possession.
The boys seemed to feel the pressure and really didn't play as a team. A number of times our key players passed without looking, leading to silly turnovers.
However, when we started playing full court press defence late in the game, we forced North Sydney into some turnovers. Also a couple of times when we slowed the pace of our game we seemed to be much stronger offensively because the whole team attacked the basket rather than just a few individuals.
This was a disappointing game because quite clearly the boys can play at a much higher level than this. Simple things like looking to see the man before passing and stronger rebounding could have made a huge difference. North Sydney Black is definitely a beatable team.
*Note: The video showed four more points fo us than was noted in the final score. Some goals may have been disallowed. We will check this when we get a copy of the scoresheet.

Going up: Anthony rises above the pack as Kurt comes in.

First points: Addam shoots from close in.

Drive: James goes strong to the basket.

Division 3 results from the weekend

Hi all,

Please note: A link to this season's complete schedule for our team is at the link to the right.

The Sharks division-3 team went down south for the weekend.
Terry's dad, Jim, was kind enough to give us a copy of his game report.
So, for all those people who want to know how the div-3 boys went, read on.

BARRENGARRY DEVELOPMENT SQUAD
The Team travelled down to Bomaderry, home of Shoalhaven Tigers were we played 3 tough and physical games.

Game 1 Sharks vs. ACT Vikings 22-46 (LOST)
Points:
Jackson 6,Callum 4, Lachlan 4, James 4, Jayden 2, Jae 2

Game 2 Sharks vs. Shoalhaven 10-48 (LOST)
Points:
Jackson 6, James 2, Jack 2

Game 3 Sharks vs. Illawarra II 31-12 (WON)
Points:
Lachlan 9, Jack 9, Jackson 7,Terry 4, Callum 2

We started off slow but eventually got there. It took us a few games to gel as a team and get some real cohesion going. There were some signs of something special in games 1 and 2. But our teamwork and combinations came together in game 3, which was a real treat after a long day.
Without doubt our MVP for all three games was Lachlan, his work on and off the ball was inspirational. He is a player that would be welcome in any of our boys under-12’s teams.
Jackson was on fire shooting from everywhere on the court, I mean this literally.
Callums' speed troubled all three teams when on court, many times running down and disrupting the oppositions offence.
The three J’s James, Jai and Jack had solid games, contributing heavily in all three games. Jayden and Terry gave there all in all three games. Although they did not score many points they did there fair share of defence against bigger and older boys.
The entire squad never gave up and tried hard in all three games, but also had fun and wore smiles on their faces all day.
All eight boys in one way or another put their body on the line unfortunately sometimes coming off second best, but they did it for the team!
Thanks to parents that helped with the bench duties.
A special thanks to Lloyd as Coach and David the assistant coach. They calmly moulded our boys into a team. Also to the ever lovely and sometimes bossy team manager Sandra, who had us organised like clockwork all day.
Can’t wait for our next lot of games at Goulburn in May.
Jim Tsangarliotis

Game report from April 2

Hi all,
Before we go to the game report just a couple of quick messages.

  • Skills session: This Saturday we have a skills session for all the under-12 teams starting at 1pm. Everyone needs to be there if possible.
  • Season fees: The club has calculated that the cost of court fees for the season is $55. If parents can bring along the money this weekend we can get all of that sorted out.
  • Team photos: If parents want a copy of the team photograph that was taken last Saturday, it will cost $11. So far most of you have said yes, I am just waiting on a response from Jim and Gordon. If you can let me know by Saturday that would be great.

Okay now to the game report and stats (I'll drop in pics later). Apologies up front for not having anything in the blocks and assists column. I'll watch the video again and add these stats later.

North Sydney Bears (Red) versus Sutherland Sharks 2
Loss: 56-25. (April 2)
MVP: James Trimble
It was clear before the whistle blew that the boys were at a serious height disadvantage. This proved to be telling. By the end of the first quarter the Sharks were down 15-0 and had a rebound count against them of 15-4. Of these, 11 of North's rebounds were at the offensive end.
North Sydney Red were as quick as us, which meant that our fast break game was stifled.
But in the second quarter the Sharks rallied, posting 8 points to the Bears 11. It was similarly close in the third quarter with the Sharks putting up 10 points to the Bears 12.
Unfortunately the foul count in the third quarter saw our only two big men fouled out of the game. Kurt Joyners fifth foul was particularly unlucky, as the referee claimed that he had used his off hand to push the player as he blocked the shot. The video clearly shows that Kurt had both hands high in the air and there was a lot of distance between him and the player whose shot he blocked.
These are the fortunes of the game.
Without our big men we had no answer to Bears who blocked shots at will and were able to out rebound us and get second and third attempts.
Despite the disappointment of the loss we did see some holes that could be exploited in the future. The Bears defence at the top of the key was very porous, especially when men were placed at the left and right posts. They also showed vulnerability to a jump shooter, as the help defence of the Bears is set for players that drive to the basket.
Next week we face North Sydney Bears (Black), a team that is considered the equal of the Reds. It will be interesting to see how the boys adapt.
Scorers: A Stone (8), J Gogoll (7), A Rodriguez (4), A Caldwell (3), K Joyner, N McOrist (2), M Northey (1).
