Game for this Sunday

Hi all,
Following the manager's meeting on Tuesday we have the following details to hand.

Training
Training will be on court 3 from 2pm every week unless otherwise notified.

Game 1 - this Sunday
We have the first and second part of the draw at last.
This Sunday we will be playing North Sydney (Red) at noon on court 1 at Sutherland. Please be at the stadium by 11.30am.

Game 2 - Sunday, April 9.
Next Sunday we will play North Sydney (black) at 10.45am on court 4 at Sutherland. Please be at the stadium by 10.15am.

As an aside, let the boys know that the North Sydney teams are probably the toughest in the whole competition so they can prepare.

Bench duty
The full roster for bench duty will be prepared as soon as we know the full draw. We will arrange, at the very least, the next two weeks on the roster before this Saturday.

Chocolates and snakes
As part of the annual fundraising for the reps teams we have to sell boxes of chocolates and snakes. Parents can pick up boxes this Saturday. I'll give everybody the full details about money and suchlike after training.

As far as I can tell at this stage that is it.

See you Saturday,
Alvin

Pre-season stats and training

Team spirit: The boys (minus Nathan and Michael) watch a match at Penrith. Pictured are (l to r) Addam, Anthony, Aaron, Jack S, James, Kurt and Jack G.

Hi all,
Under this little bit of chat are the boys' pre-season statistics.
Every player was the best in at least one category, except for Jackson Gogoll who was second and third in a bunch of categories. Jackson was probably our most consistent player in the pre-season, which is why he ended up with three MVP awards.

Draw and bench duty:
Over the next few days we should get the draw from Basketball NSW. At the same time I will put up the bench duty schedule which will appear at the top right. I have also updated the links (right) so that we can click through to the file for the addresses of each club and also check results and draws.
  • The club addresses are on a 1.7M pdf file so they may take a bit to download. If it becomes a problem I will reproduce it in the blog.
  • The draw and results link goes to Basketball NSW. Click on the U/12 link at the top of the page for men to get all the information. Dates, draws and standings links appear on the left.

At the moment all I know about our first game is that it will be against one of the North Sydney sides, which look to be the top sides in the competition on early results. It will be a very tough game but if the boys continue to train like they did yesterday we will be in with a real chance.

Training
The training session with John yesterday was one of the best I have seen for under-12s. The top trainers were James Trimble and Anthony Rodriguez. Winners of the knock-out lay-up competition at the end were Addam Stone and Michael Northey.
Now on with the stats for the pre-season.

Some pics from the weekend

Before I put up the pre-season statistics on Sunday, I thought we should have a few pics to look at from last weekend.
Hopefully by the end of this season we will have a nice selection for everyone.

Big man hustle: Anthony snatches a loose ball under the offensive basket.

Basket battle: James, Aaron and Addam battle for the ball.

Break-away: Jack Suva takes the ball all the way

Shot up: The boys watch hopefully as the ball rolls on the rim after a close-in shot

Jack attack: Jack Suva (5) and Jack Gogoll attack the basket after a fast-break shot.

Finding a passage: Kurt works his way through the defence.

Drive-by: James snatches a fast break off a steal.

High flyer: Kurt rises above the pack make a shot

Battle of the boards: Both teams get ready for the ball to fall.

Penrith pre-season results

Important update: Our first game for the season on Sunday has been turned into a bye. We were to play Penrith but they have opted to go down to division-3. Our division now consists of two Norths Bears teams, Ryde, Hills, Manly and the two Sutherland teams.
Training will go ahead this Saturday at 2pm. Photographs of the teams will take place during the first home game at Sutherland Sharks Stadium.

Hi all,
Not surprisingly we won both of our games at the second pre-season series of games. There were a number of teams wondering why we were even there, after we won all three of our games last week. I am shooting off a letter of ask Basketball NSW the same question and a few others as well.

We beat Ryde 20-10 in a game shortened by the clock and then followed up with a comprehensive victory over Penrith, 45-15.

I have included game statistics for the Penrith and Ryde game below with match reports. Sometime over the next week, we will put in our pre-season totals so all the boys can see how they have gone over the past weeks.

Game:
Sharks v Penrith, Penrith Stadium.
Win: 45-15.
MVP: James Trimble

This was a game that was strong at both ends. The boys passing was fluid and fast, settting up numerous easy baskets on the fast break. Kurt played a particularly dominant role and for the first time this season he outrebounded Anthony.
But that didn't stop Anthony from coming away with a double-double (10 points, 10 rebounds)
Our shooting percentage was also high (38% off 21 of 52 shooting), a testament to the way the boys got the ball down the court. Even more importantly all the boys scored. Our shot distribution across the whole team has been an early highlight of the season.
On the defensive end, Penrith only very occasionally got a second or third shot.
James MVP award came through some excellent defence. Even though he doesn't show up strongly on the stat sheet, his foot movement and high pressure defence caused numerous turnovers and his passes were crisp and accurate. He was often the axis for plays that resulted in goals.
The speed of Jackson Suva, Jackson Gogol and Kurt Joyner often had them involved in passages of play at both ends of the basket. Addam Stone really found his position in this game, giving him clear shots and a few rebounds off the weak left side. Aaron Caldwell was strong when he went to the basket, attracting fouls on the shot or converting close-in drives. However many of his turnovers were off the dribble and he needs to look for the pass earlier than he is at present if he wants to reduce this.
This was a great team game and it is wonderful how the boys are coming together before the season has even started properly.

Sharks vs Ryde Bulls
at Penrith
Win: 20-10

MVP: Jack Gogoll

This was a substantially shortened game due to a clock error but in that time Ryde proved it could be a difficult team over this season.
The Bull's two big men L Parwada (10) and D Miladinovic (15) dominated the boards and controlled the scoring. As a result Ryde repeatedly got two or three shots at the basket, while we often struggled to get one. Number 10 was also good at posting but the boys showed a lot of savvy and double-teamed him front and back once they worked out his approach and stopped him cold.
As well as being dominated on the boards, we were also a bit loose with our passes, giving easy steals to the opposition.
Yet despite this, our speed and another excellent game by Jackson Gogoll kept us comfortably in the lead.
If we can learn to handle the big men, we could easily dominate Ryde in future games.

URGENT INFO: Extra pre-season games

Hi all,
John has just phoned through. Because of the match-ups last weekend we will be playing two more pre-season games this Sunday at Penrith. These games are vital in deciding whether we are a division-2 or division-3 team.
Even if we don't win, points for-and-against will be crucial. If we keep Penrith and Ryde to low scores we may still get into division-2 even without a win, so the boys have to play at the top of their ability right to the end.
We also have another 8am start, so we need to have the team in Penrith by 7.30am.
  • 8am, versus Ryde, Court 2
  • 10.30am, versus Penrith, Court 3

The boys will be playing Ryde and Penrith, both very good teams at a very similar level to our own, so we need to step up.
Ryde is a very big team, so it will be a real test for our rebounders and shooters.
After these games there will be eight teams in division-1, eight teams in division-2 and four in division-3 (there should be eight in division-3 but there are only 12 teams in division 2/3 in total so that reduces numbers).
I have added a new link to Penrith for those who need directions.
I'll call parents on Friday night and catch up with everyone on Saturday to confirm details.
Cheers
Alvin

Pre-season results

Drive by: Jack Gogoll takes the ball to the hoop

At long last the stats are in.
It's been a busy couple of days so we are later than usual.
I'll add some more photos over the next couple of days and some game reports too.
First up, we won all three games, which was great for the team's confidence but should also assure us of a spot in division-2.
There were a couple of great observations we made from the videos we took.
The first was how well the team looked ahead for the pass in every game. This team in the pre-season already has more assists than the division-2 team last year.
Also the way the team got steals was impressive. While a steal has to be awarded to the person who captures the ball, many of our steals were tipped from the hands of other team mates in the passing lane.
Now down to the statistics.
Match reports have now been be added.

Defence: The boys prepare to repel a Comets' attack

Versus Alexandria (Sydney Comets) 8am, Bankstown Stadium

Win: 32-20

Match report: This was the first time that our entire team was on hand against the Comets. The addition of Kurt and Aaron added to our speed up the court on both the defensive and offensive ends. Kurt also proved to be great against the boards, giving Anthony "Chairman of the Boards" Rodriguez some strong assistance. We opened with the five players who played both days at Wollongong. The time they had together really showed and they quickly leapt out to a 10-0 lead before the first substitution. We looked like we had the game well in hand, but some sloppy defence and poor shooting combined to suddenly bring the game back to 16-16 early in the second half. But it was a short-lived rally and the boys got their heads back into the game and took it away from the Comets. By then end of the game it was clear that the Sharks now had the measure of the team that beat them in the first game in Wollongong.

Scorers: N McOrist (12), J Gogoll (7), A Caldwell (6), M Northey (2), A Rodriguez (2), A Stone (1).

________________________________________________

Inbound: Michael battles for position for an Aaron pass

Versus Bankstown Bruins
Noon, Bankstown Stadium Win: 52-19

Match report: Bankstown were never in this game and it was clear by the end of the day that they would be relegated to division-3. It was a bit of a shame because there has always been an intense rivalry between the two clubs.
The Sharks dominated simply by being quicker and more able to get fast passes up the court. There was also an enormous disparity between the skill levels and experience of the two teams. Bankstown struggled to penetrate while the Sharks attacked at will and comprehensively out rebounded their opponents. The game was more or less over by the end of the first half.

Catching a breather: Aaron, Kurt, Jackson G and Michael rest on the bench.

Versus Manly Waringah Sea Eagles 2pm,
Bankstown Stadium
Win: 43-38

Match report: As one rivalry faded another was created. This was the most exciting game of the day and there is little doubt that these two teams will have some incredibly tight games this season. There was little in it through the entire game but fortunately on the scoring end Addam Stone pulled out a couple of baskets at crucial times.
Equally as crucial were the rebounds and steals. There is no doubt that this was a whole of team effort, especially when Anthony went down heavily in the first half and had to be taken off. Thankfully he was back and fired up in the second half and once again dominated the boards and pulled off some great blocks.
Everyone contributed. Even those team members who don't appear strongly in categories played important roles, disrupting Manly at every turn.
Proof of this came when it was time to choose the MVP, which was split three ways.

Important pre-season division games

Hi all again.

Late news: The Sharks have a bench training course this Saturday from noon. Any parents who need to learn bench should get along if they can. The bench roster will start following the Bankstown games. All parents must be able to do bench.

Now, back to our regular channel.
We have a big weekend. On Sunday we will be playing three pre-season games that will determine if we play as a division-2 or division-3 team this season.
We will be playing the games at Bankstown Stadium, Condell Park.

Game times, teams and court numbers are as follows.

  • 8am: Court 3, versus Sydney Comets
  • Noon: Court 4, versus Bankstown Bruins
  • 2pm: Court 3, versus Manly Warringah Sea Eagles.

There will be two points for a win, one for a loss and none for a forfeit.

The cost for the day will be $120 at least and may be $171 if Sutherland is unable to supply a referee. I will check with John to find out about this but imagine that we would be supplying referees.

The games will consist of two 12-minute halves and will be fully timed.
Overtime periods, if required, will be three minutes.
There are two time-outs per half.

As usual I have left a link to the Bankstown website so that if anyone gets lost they can find the details there.

Training for these important games is on Saturday at Sutherland and will be from 2pm to 3.30pm.

If anybody has any questions please call me on the usual numbers or email me.

Illawarra Junior Seaside Classic - Sunday

Deep in thought: Nathan, James, Anthony and
Addam watch a Sharks division-1 game.

Before anything else, everyone should be be prepared for three pre-season games at Bankstown next Sunday. They start at 8am at Bankstown Stadium in Condell Park. Our first game is against Alexandria (Sydney City) yet again. I'll post all the details a little later in the week.

Meanwhile here are the stats for Sunday at the Illawarra Classic.
A special thanks to Ridge from division-one who helped us out as a sub in the Sydney City game.
Also a special thanks to Steve, the coach of division one, who let Addam Stone have a couple of minutes with his team on Saturday.
Also thanks go out to Marcus for the kind comments about Zone 3.

Game Report: Sharks Black (us) v Sharks Blue.

Loss 35-24.

The scoreline in this game was deceptive, especially when you take into account that Sharks Blue were up 22-12 at half time.
That said: we only had five players on Sunday and the boys showed great passion and extraordinary stamina.
Despite this we were never in the game. As a team we struggled to execute under the basket finishing wth just 9 from 43 shots. Like every team that plays Sharks Blue, we struggled to contain Thibaut Potin who scored six of the Blue's first eight baskets.
But there were plenty of pluses. Anthony (10 rebounds) and James (8 rebounds) have improved with every game under the boards. Also the five players we had worked really well as a unit. A lot of this had to do with point guard Jack Suva who distributed the ball well. He deserved more than two assists.
Nathan got into the game on all levels, contributing wih some good defence and pulling down five rebounds, an impressive count for someone of his stature.
Our highest scorer Addam Stone was relentless and was unfortunate not to put up more points against some stiflng defence.
Scorers: Addam Stone (8), Anthony Rodriguez (7), Nathan McOrist (4), James Trimble (4), Jack Suva (3).
Top rebounders: Anthony Rodriguez (10)
Top steals: Jack Suva (3)

Game report
Sharks v Alexandria
Win 47-19
It was like a different team hit the floor on Sunday afternoon. The execution in this game was the best we had all weekend. It was great to have Rydge from division-1 step up to help out as a sub, but it is hard to imagine that the team would have not won this game anyway, despite his significant contribution.
Addam Stone led from the front, converting on four out of five drives and jump shots in the first few minutes. By the time Rydge came on the Sharks were already up 22-8.
Once again our big men looked strong under the basket, with Anthony Rodriguez pulling down 11 rebounds and James Trimble getting another eight.
Jack Suva's controlled dribbling and passes led to three assists and only three turnovers for the whole game.
Nathan saw the court well, anticipating passes and picking up four steals He was also deadly from the free-throw line, making six from seven shots.
Rydge is an extraordinary player. He is point guard size but so tough under the basket that he plays like a small forward. All of his points game from in close, and his ten rebounds were invaluable.
The boys all looked like they belonged on the starting five for this game.

Illawarra Junior Seaside Classic - Saturday

Hi,

Below are the stats for the two games we played.

Match reports will appear in the next few days.

Game report
Sharks v Illawarra
Win 24-19

This was a hard fought and scrappy game.
The boys got out to an early lead on the back of some good defence. The two Jacks, Jackson Gogoll (5 steals) and Jackson Suva (4 steals), harrassed the opposite point guards so well that they set up a number of great fast breaks.
The whole team were excellent on the boards. Anthony Rodriguez took the most with seven, but James Trimble, Jackson Gogoll and Addam Stone contributed five each.
What hurt us was our execution and in the second half our defence. Only two of our scorers got above 20 per cent shooting and after being 16-6 at the break, we let in three back-to-back baskets to make it 16-12.
To make matters worse Anthony fouled out early in the second half.
After that the boys tightened up to compensate, forcing silly shots from the Illawarra team and hustling hard for the loose ball.
This was not a pretty game but the win really boosted the team's confidence.
Scorers: Addam Stone (6), Nathan McOrist (5), Anthony Rodriguez (4), James Trimble (4), Jack Suva (3), Jackson Gogoll (2).
Top rebounder: Anthony Rodriguez (7)
Top steals: Jackson Gogoll (5)
Top Assists: Jackson Gogoll (1), Nathan McOrist (1), Anthony Rodriguez (1).

Game report
Sydney City Comets v Sharks
Loss 42-32
If there was ever proof that a pep talk can make a difference, then this was it. Jackson Gogoll's dad, Jim, had a chat to the two Jacks in his car as they went to lunch between games.
Whatever he said, it inspired his son.
Jackson Gogoll was everywhere on defence and attacked the basket almost at will in the game aganst the Comets. He top-scored with 14 points and at the same time picked up 11 steals.
The MVPs in our first game were also inspired. Anthony Rodriguez pulled down 13 rebounds and James Trimble 10.
Yet it wasn't enough. Many of the players struggled to hit their shots, most often because they were rushed or not in good position. If we can pick up our execution just a fraction then we will be hard to stop.
Addam Stone brought up the ball a lot and picked up two assists. As with our assists in most games, there should have been more.
Jack Suva was also fast to bring the ball up and while he may not have had anything in the assists category, he did set up fast breaks that led directly to points.
In this, our second game, there were marked improvements across the board. It was a trend that marked the weekend and culminated in a blow-out win against this team just a day later.
Scorers: Jackson Gogoll (14), Nathan McOrist (6), Addam Stone (6), Jackson Suva (4), James Trimble (2).
