Fun and games

Hello All,
We have a number of things that need to be worked out as soon as possible.
Once you have had a chat about it, please give Alvin a call.

Pre Season Games
We already have our first lot of pre-season games booked in.

Sunday, February 5: We will be playing some teams from the ACT at Sutherland. For all the details keep checking back here. I’ll add the information as it comes to hand.

Sunday, February 12: Some Manly teams will be paying us a visit for some more pre-season games on this Sunday. This will give us our first look at the kind of competition we will be facing in reps this year.

Saturday / Sunday, February 25 / 26: There is a carnival up at Gosford over this weekend. At this point whether we go or not depends upon parents. We will need to find accommodation or be prepared to drive there and back over two days. Could all parents let us know if they are interested in being part of this as we will need to organise it quickly. The other division-2 team is definitely going.

A fun day for the boys:
Before the season kicks off properly, we thought it would be a great idea to get all the boys together for a bit of fun.
Last year one of the boys in the division-2 team celebrated his birthday at a place called Zone 3. Click the link and you will get all the details. It’s like a computer game come to life.
After that birthday party, last-year’s division-2 team bonded wonderfully. It was one of the most fun experiences of the whole season.
We thought it would be a great idea to do it again this season before the rep games start.
It costs $21 each for three 20-minute games if there are 15-or-more starters, or $23 if there are 14-or-less starters. We can also order pizzas at a discount if the kids get hungry. Although last time all they wanted to do was go back in and play another game.
We have checked the best dates and the weekend of February 18, 19 looks ideal, as there are no games that weekend for us and there is space that can be booked both days.
Please let Michelle or Alvin know if you want to come along and which day you prefer.
We will let everyone know the arrangements as soon as we can.
After that we will collect the money in advance and make a booking for Saturday or Sunday afternoon.
We will also be inviting the other division-2 team as well. Brothers, sisters, mums and dads are all welcome to join in. Plenty did last time.

That’s all for the moment.
Cheers
Alvin and Michelle.

First time together

Hello all,
We had our first training session today on an extremely hot day (30 degrees plus).
Some boys from the development team (pictured above) also joined us for the session.

A big hello to the five development boys, Lachlan Andrew, Jackson Wetherbee, Terry Tsangarliotis, Jack Peters and Jayden Andrew who joined in for this training session.
We’ll keep you in touch with how the development team go through the season as well.

We didn’t have the whole team training today thanks to the school holidays but already have a very good idea of the type of season ahead.
John has said that he wants the boys to "be a good passing and catching team".
‘’If we do that we could be a great team," he told them.
The other side of the coin is defence, and once again John has stressed how important this is.
"If you aren’t playing defence, no matter how good you are, you will be subbed off," he said.
"You must always get between the ball and the basket."
The boys worked really well on their fundamentals and even if the team doesn’t make it to the pointy end of the season there is no doubt that they will all improve markedly.
The representative season doesn’t start until March 26 but it is still going to be a busy time for the boys with a bunch of pre-season games to come.

February 5: We will be playing some teams from the ACT in a round robin tournament at Sutherland. Times are yet to be confirmed but the games will probably be in the morning.

February 12: On this weekend we will host some under-12 and under-16 teams from Manly at Sutherland. Once again times and details have yet to be confirmed.

Goulburn carnival: There is also a basketball tournament at Goulburn in early February or late March that we may enter. I'll post the information on this when we have more definite information.

Pre-season games: March 12 and March 19 are the pre-season games. These games will decide which division or pool we are in.

We hope to see you all next week at 2.30pm for our next Saturday training session.

Cheers

Alvin

First training sessions

Hi all,
John has probably got hold of everyone by now.
But if you need a reminder our first training session is at 2.30pm this Saturday, January 21, at the stadium.
We will have a second training session next Saturday, January 28, at the same time.
See you all there.

Pre-season games

Hi all,
Some news just to hand.
There are 13 teams nominated for division-2 under-12 this year.
North Sydney and Sutherland have two division-2 teams.
Bankstown, Penrith, Hills, City (Alexandria), Manly, Hornsby, Glebe, Macarthur and Ryde all have one division-2 team apiece.
Only eight teams can be in division-2, so there will be some pre-season challenges to determine which eight will be in the top division.
The pre-season games are on March 12 and March 19. The venues for these games have yet to be announced.
The season starts on March 26.
After chatting to some other clubs, there may be a couple of opportunities for some friendly competitions before these dates, although that will depend on whether the administrations of the different clubs have time to organise them.
As usual I will keep everybody informed of developments as they come to hand.
Cheers
Alvin

Getting ready for 2006

Hi all,
I'm Alvin, the manager of one of the Sutherland Sharks under-12, division 2 basketball teams coached by John Suva.

It seemed like a good idea to set this up online to keep everyone informed of the latest news.
On here you will find practice times, match reports and any other guff that seems appropriate. Once I've got a handle on all this I'll also upload regular photos and keep updated statistics (rebounds, steals, shooting percentages).

First up we have the team, at least I think this is it.
After interpreting the hieroglyphics of the three coaches (division-1 and the two division-2 teams) I believe this is the team that John is coaching and that I am managing.
In alphabetical order the team looks like it is:
Aaron Caldwell
Jackson Gogoll
Kurt Joyner
Nathan McOrist
Michael Northey
Anthony Rodriguez
Addam Stone
Jack Suva
James Trimble

Parents may like to know that our division-2 teams have been split evenly. Unlike a lot of other clubs Sutherland has not created one strong team and one weak team at this level.
The object of putting together balanced teams has been to look to the long-term future of the U-12 boys division and the club. I believe that all of the division-1 players will be going up to U-14s next year, which means that this season's division-2 players will fill their spots next season.
With this split all the boys on both teams get plenty of playing time and can develop far more over the coming year. Our first practice session is in January.
I'll post the time and exact details as soon as I have that information confirmed.

For anybody interested in going to a basketball camp over the summer holidays, check out the Sutherland camp running later in January.
The details from Shark's Bite are:
Ages: 6-14
Dates: Monday-Friday, Jan. 23-27 - This is a four-day camp - excludes Jan. 26 (public holiday). Participants are expected to attend all four days.
Duration: 9 am - 2 pm
Lunch break: Noon-1 pm BYO lunch and drink bottle
Cost: $95 - includes basketball and Sharks T-shirt.
The camp will be divided into two groups: the first group will be a learn to play. The second group will be for the older and more advanced players.
A chance to win daily prizes, PLUS AWARDS.
Positions are limited - first in, first served rule applies.Closing date to register: no later than Tues. 17/01/06 (till 10.30 pm).Check out the website at Sharks if you need any more info.
That's it for now. I'll keep everyone updated as the season progresses.
Cheers
Alvin
